Write a Photography Brief That Produces Useful Brand Assets

A photography brief connects the creative direction to the material a business actually needs.

A photography brief connects the creative direction to the material a business actually needs. Without that connection, a shoot can produce beautiful images that are difficult to use in the website, campaign or presentation they were intended for. A clear brief gives everyone a shared definition of a useful result.

Begin with the message and placements

Explain what the images should communicate and where they will appear. A website introduction, product detail and social announcement require different compositions. Include real layout examples where possible so the photographer can account for crops and text placement.

Describe the desired character with concrete references. Explain whether you are responding to the lighting, colour, composition or sense of space. A reference board is more useful when it explains the choices rather than simply collecting attractive images.

Turn the brief into a practical shot list

List the essential subjects, people and locations. Separate required images from optional ideas so the team can prioritise if the schedule changes. Adobe’s commercial photography guide outlines planning tools such as a moodboard and shot list.

Confirm who prepares products, spaces and participants. Small details such as packaging condition, clothing and background objects can affect how much usable material a session produces.

Define the handoff

Agree on the delivery formats, intended uses and review process before the shoot. Ask for suitable crop options where the same subject needs to work across several placements.

After delivery, organise approved images by subject and purpose. Keep a simple record of where each image is used so updates are easier later. The brief has done its job when the team receives a library of purposeful assets and can put them to work without starting another search for the missing photograph.
